October 2009 (Medialink) -
ANCHOR LEAD: For children, Halloween is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year - filled with candy, costumes and creative mischief. But October 31st is also one of the most dangerous days of the year for children to walk. Parents and drivers can both take steps to ensure children will be safe as they trick-or-treat. Bobbi Owens has more. (:57)
SCRIPT: Lifestyles, I'm Bobbi Owens. On average, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Halloween compared to other days of the year. That's why safety should be a top priority for both drivers and parents this weekend. Moira Donahue, Director of Safe Kids Worldwide's pedestrian safety program, offers tips to make sure parents can help their kids stay as safe as possible.
CUT: (Donahue) One thing parents can do is look at your children's costumes before they head out for trick-or-treating and make sure they can be seen by drivers. So look for costumes that are light colored and bright colored. Give your child a flashlight or add some reflective materials to their costume.
SCRIPT: Drivers also need to take extra precautions.
CUT: (Donahue) Safe Kids and FedEx recommend that drivers take extra time this Halloween to look for pedestrians. So slow down, be particularly alert in residential neighborhoods and drive with your full headlights on during the day so you can spot trick-or-treaters from further distances.
