Safe Crossing Week is November 1 to 7October 2009 (Medialink) -
ANCHOR LEAD: Most school children know to cross traffic lights on the green and not in between, but do they know what to do at railroad train crossings? T.K. Anderson has more. (: 58)
SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm T.K. Anderson. According to Safe Kids USA, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children ages 1 to 14 in the United States. Now Safe Kids is teaming up with CN, one of the largest railroads in North America, to teach elementary school students around the country how to stay safe at railroad tracks and near trains. Chrissy Cianflone is with Safe Kids. Chrissy, do you have some tips to keep kids safe?
CUT: (Cianflone) The first one would be for children to never play on train tracks or anywhere near a train. Secondly, only cross at railroad crossings - obey all signs and signals and listen for the warning bells and train whistles - that's a good indicator that a train is coming. So we teach the kids when a train is coming to stand at least ten giant steps away from the track.
SCRIPT: Where can people go for more information about rail safety and the Teaching Safety For Life program?
CUT: (Cianflone)
